Humpback whales, what can I say, amazing, incredible mammals. They travel far and bring new songs each year, that have the trace of their travels in them. They are playful and curious. When you look eye to giant eye with a humpback a connection is made, I see awareness and even seem to take care as they move around you. Sometimes coming in just a few feet from you. However the power of these creatures when they decide to move is staggering. Sometimes they become very boisterous when two males compete for the attention of a female, in something called a heat run. So it is not without danger jumping into the middle of the deep open ocean and getting close to these humpbacks. Africa encompasses the elemental, one of the last few wild places in the world. At night you can hear the lions roaring, the hyena howling, hippos laughing and wildebeest grunting. Elephants smash and crunch through the forest. The sounds and rhythms of Africa, are real and personal, not just a TV show! If I could say one thing it would be to make Africa your number one travel choice. Just go there, it's incredible!

The Great Barrier Reef holds some surprises and one of the most amazing are the sleek and beautiful Dwarf Minke whales. Actually they are about 20-25 ft (8-10 m) long and weigh in at several tons. The Minkes visit the reef each year. Sometimes 20 or more loosely congregate in areas of deepish water. They are very curious and will repeatedly cruise past, sometimes closer and closer, until they might only be a few feet away. The important thing is to remain calm and don't make a lot of noise. The Minkes are the focus of "genuine" research by scientists in Australia. Some of the mysteries they are studying are where they go after the reef and why the Minkes that visit the reef are all of a similar age. The Minke are a beautiful animal that needs our protection. The Northern Lights also known as the Aurora Borealis are the result of the interaction of charged particles from sun and the Earth's magnetic field (magnetosphere). Actually it is the earths magnetosphere that has protected the atmosphere from being stripped of important life giving elements by the high energy particles streaming from the sun. High energy cosmic radiation is also diverted by the magnetosphere. In fact you could say that the presence of a magnetosphere and hence am aurora are a precondition for intelligent complex life forms where ever they might exist. Theorizing aside, the aurora are beautiful, ever changing, unpredictable, dynamic and covering the sky will leave you in awe. Of course it sometimes gets a little chilly, on one night it got as low as minus 37 degrees Celsius. Palau is a group of incredible islands located in Micronesia. Palau is a diver's paradise, truly incredible diving on all levels. You can float through huge light filled caverns like Blue Holes or hook on at Blue Corner and watch as the sharks patrol the current for food. Yap is one of those places that seems almost too fantastic to believe. I recall learning about the incredible stone money of Yap as a child. Now to actually see it and get involved in the culture was a real treat. The stone money is still used and culturally valued. Interestingly the value of the money depends on many factors apart from just its size. Apart from stone money, Yap is also famous for its manta rays. They are one of the most beautiful creatures I have ever seen. To watch them swooping past just a few feet feet away is a sight to behold. Diving with mantas is an experience not to be missed. The city of Varanasi, located on the Ganges River, has been continuously inhabited for 5000 years, making it one of the oldest living cities in the world. For Hindus, the Ganges is known as Mother Ganga and is considered to be a God with healing and purifying powers. Hindus, if able, will make a pilgrimage to bathe in the river at least once in their life. Varanasi also draws in the sick and dying who believe they will be healed or find peace if they die in Varanasi. In my Sri Lanka gallery I endeavor to capture some of the character and beauty of this pearl of a country as it emerges from civil war and the tsunami. Laos is a small landlocked country bordered by Burma, China, Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand. The legendary Mekong flows along the border between Laos and Thailand. Laos includes the delightful town of Luang Prabang as well as the small pleasant capital of Vientiane. In Luang Prabang the streets are lined with old colonial French buildings, many of which have been converted into shops or restaurants. The food here is some of the best in Asia. It is also common to see french bread sticks in the markets. Laos also offers some beautiful wilderness areas and a diversity of colorful tribal people with different ethnic influences. Laos however still bears the scars of the Vietnam war, during which more bombs were dropped on Laos than in all of WWII. While the country is gradually recovering and modernizing, it still offers one of the most authentic experiences in Asia. Agra is the hometown of the Taj Mahal. The Taj Mahal is a beautiful building and is one of the most popular tourist destinations in India. It is not easy to get a unique image, but with some effort it can be done. The Mughal emperor Shah Jahan commissioned the Taj Mahal in 1632 as a mausoleum for his wife Mumtaz Mahal. One theory is that the Shah also planned a counterpart for himself in black on the opposite bank. However he was imprisoned by his son Aurangzeb in the nearby Red Fort before he could carry out this plan. A taste of New Zealand. The images are from Marlborough Sounds in the Northern part of the South Island and also from Waheke Island in the North Island. One unusual aspect of New Zealand is the variety of different climates and terrains clustered so close together that it almost seems impossible. For example in the South island there is a hot dry Mediterranean micro climate where grapes can be grown, while close by there are rainforests and snow covered mountains and fijords, as well as the balmy Marlborough Sounds.
