The Northern Lights also known as the Aurora Borealis are the result of the interaction of charged particles from sun and the Earth's magnetic field (magnetosphere). Actually it is the earths magnetosphere that has protected the atmosphere from being stripped of important life giving elements by the high energy particles streaming from the sun. High energy cosmic radiation is also diverted by the magnetosphere. In fact you could say that the presence of a magnetosphere and hence am aurora are a precondition for intelligent complex life forms where ever they might exist.

Theorizing aside, the aurora are beautiful, ever changing, unpredictable, dynamic and covering the sky will leave you in awe. Of course it sometimes gets a little chilly, on one night it got as low as minus 37 degrees Celsius.
